Eastern Mutual Insurance Company is looking to hire a dedicated Personal Lines Underwriter/Marketing Assistant and a Claims Examiner. These are full-time, in-office roles. The ideal candidates will have prior experience in the insurance sector and will receive training on our specific policy management as well as imaging systems used at Eastern Mutual. While starting with basic responsibilities, we expect our new hires to rapidly take on a comprehensive portfolio.

As a Personal Lines Underwriter/Marketing Assistant, the successful applicant will collaborate closely with independent agents to thoroughly evaluate both existing and prospective risks related to Eastern Mutual insurance products, and actively promote Eastern Mutual’s product advantages. Proficiency in swiftly entering and adjusting risk data in our policy management system is a must. Success in this role hinges on accuracy and a meticulous attention to detail. Candidates should be prepared to make informed decisions and respond promptly to agents’ inquiries and other relevant requests.

In addition, the Personal Lines Underwriter/Marketing Assistant will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with various other Eastern Mutual offerings and provide necessary support to fellow underwriting team members. This position also includes assisting in driving growth through targeted marketing efforts, while building strong professional relationships that encourage new business submissions.

Responsibilities for this position consist of:

  1. Processing applications in collaboration with agents to ensure all necessary information is secured for underwriting.
  2. Evaluating information from applications and generating quotes for acceptable risks.
  3. Issuing new business and initiating inspection requests.
  4. Reviewing inspection reports to decide on policy continuance or cancellation.
  5. Managing endorsements and handling cancellations and non-renewal requests.
  6. Assisting with agency outreach and marketing initiatives to increase Eastern Mutual’s presence within our independent agent network.
  7. Identifying opportunities to cross-sell or upsell additional Eastern Mutual’s products during the underwriting process.
  8. Collaborating on the development of marketing materials, such as appetite guides or digital newsletters, to keep agents informed of product updates.

Preferred qualifications include:

  1. Two or more years in the insurance field focusing on personal lines products.
  2. Knowledge of URB product lines.
  3. Ability to handle multiple tasks while ensuring detail orientation.
  4. A Bachelor’s or Associate degree.
  5. Computer proficiency, especially with Microsoft Office applications.
  6. Experience using insurance policy management and imaging systems.
  7. Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken.
  8. A “sales-minded” approach to underwriting with a focus on customer service and relationship management.
  9. Experience or interest in digital marketing, social media coordination, or event planning is a plus.
  10. Industry designations such as AINS or CPCU are a plus.

Claims Examiner

Position Summary

The Claims Examiner is responsible for investigating, evaluating, and resolving P&C claims in accordance with policy provisions, New York regulations, and company guidelines. This role requires sound judgment, strong communication skills, patience, and the ability to professionally manage difficult or high-pressure situations while maintaining a fair and customer-focused approach.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Investigate and evaluate Property and Casualty claims, including coverage analysis
  • Manage claims from first notice of loss through resolution
  • Communicate clearly and empathetically with policyholders, agents, attorneys, and vendors
  • Resolve conflicts and disputes professionally while maintaining policy compliance
  • Negotiate settlements within assigned authority, even in challenging or time-sensitive situations
  • Review estimates, reports, medical records, and other supporting documentation
  • Ensure compliance with New York State insurance regulations and internal guidelines
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and well-documented claim files
  • Identify potential fraud or subrogation opportunities

 

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of P&C claims handling experience preferred
  • Strong knowledge of property and/or casualty coverages
  • Familiarity with New York insurance regulations
  • Familiarity with URB forms preferred
  • Demonstrated patience and the ability to handle emotionally charged conversations
  • Strong conflict-resolution and negotiation skills
  • Ability to manage a caseload effectively under pressure and deadlines
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational and time-management abilities
  • Ability to work independently in a small-company environment

 

Licensing

  • New York Adjuster License preferred or ability to obtain if required
